The show features professor Cynthia Bir, an injury prevention expert. She plays a similar role on ESPN\'s "Sport Science." Her TV work began about five years ago. On "Fight Science," Bir uses a range of high-tech monitors to take a real-time look at self-defense experts in action. The TV jobs put the 41-year-old mother of four on camera with some of the world\'s best-known athletes and martial artists. It\'s an approach designed to mix information with a big dose of entertainment. "Obviously, there has to be eye candy in the show - and I\'m not it," Bir said. "I see my role as bringing some science into it." Those she\'s worked with include Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo Bills quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and U.S. Olympic softball gold medalist Jennie Finch. In one "Sport Science" episode, she compared the physical effort of future Portland Trailblazers player Jerryd Bayless dribbling a basketball and Guns N\' Roses member Matt Sorum drumming. Bir\'s academic work has focused on preventing sports injuries. She has worked to develop better head gear for boxers and chest protectors for baseball catchers. She also has worked on law enforcement equipment issues such as the injuries officers sustain when a bullet is caught in their bulletproof vests. And she has looked at the effects of less-lethal weapons such as rubber bullets and Tasers to guide in their use. For that reason, Bir said she\'s particularly excited about the Feb. 25 episode of "Fight Science" called "Super Cops." "That has been the primary area of my research for the last 15 years," she said. "It was an opportunity for me to bring both worlds together."
