Though he bogeyed his final hole of the day, the par three ninth, Vaughan still found himself two shots better than Loren Roberts and decorated amateur Tim Jackson of Tennessee.
Roberts and Jackson shot 68, a shot better than a group 69 headed by PGA Senior champion Tom Lehman, British Senior champion Bernhard Langer and included Mark Calcavecchia, Joe Ozaki and Michael Allen.
Local hero Fred Couples, who was nervous about his hometown appearance, managed an even par round of 70 and was tied with Tom Watson, Jay Haas and Scott Simpson.
Watson could have finished closer to Vaughan but bogeyed three of his final four holes and was obviously showing fatigue from his trip back from the Senior British Open.

That is just a pipe dream at Sahalee. Funk, one of the game\'s most accurate drivers, opened with a 76.

Compton is on his third heart. He has survived two heart transplants and has overcome physical and mental obstacles as he seeks to regain his PGA Tour card.
He took a big step in the right direction Thursday when he shot a seven-under par 63 at the Greenbrier Classic.
His effort for the day was matched by co-leader Matt Every, who finished late and managed just one birdie over his final nine holes to tie Compton at the top.
But is Compton who has touched so many with his personal story. His first transplant came at age 12 then again three years ago when he suffered a heart attack.
"I\'m supposed to miss cuts and shoot bad scores, it wasn\'t really the way it\'s been playing out," said Compton, who is playing this event on a sponsor\'s exemption.
"I know I\'m a good player and I have a lot of the adversity in front of me with the game and health. But I always feel like if I stick in there and keep trying, something eventually good is gonna happen."
A lot of good happened for him after he got past the third hole. His start gave no indication as to what would transpire for him.
He bogeyed the second and third holes to start but then played nine-under par golf over his final 15 holes.
"It\'s a good course for me," he said.
Compton also has his mind on helping someone else this week. He\'s got a good friend\'s brother carrying his bag and his caddy, Vic Bilskoog, aspires to go to the PGA Tour qualifying school
. "I\'m trying to get him enough money to go to tour school," Compton said. "I just kept trying to make birdies, we really enjoyed the day."
The day was interrupted for the afternoon players for about 90 minutes with lightning in the area, but no rain. Most of the low scores came in the morning.
A shot behind Compton and Every were Pat Perez, George McNeil and Jeff Overton at 64.
The old-style course, the Old White, was expected to yield birdies.
"There will be a lot of low scores," Compton predicted when he finished early.

American Brittany Lincicome was a shot back of the leaders. She found herself three-over par after her first two holes but steadied herself to finish three-under at 69.
She was tied with three other players -- Amy Yang, Sun Young Yoo and Anne-Lise Caudal of France.
The day started with wind and rain and made it especially tough for the early tee times. Jiyai Shin, the top-ranked player in the world was one of those early starters. She bogeyed her second hole, birdied the third then ran off 14 straight pars before she finished with a birdie at 18 for a 71, one-under.

Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) - The Philadelphia Phillies acquired Roy Oswalt, as the Houston Astros pitcher waived his no-trade clause, a league source disclosed Thursday.
The Phillies will ship rookie hurler J.A. Happ and two prospects to the Astros for the three-time all-star.
Oswalt, who signed a five-year, $73 million extension with the Astros in 2006, will receive $16 million next year and another $16 million salary or $2 million buyout money in 2012.
The Phillies, who already shelled out $142 million in salary, will reportedly take on another $5 million with the acquisition of the pitcher.
In spite of a 6-12 record, the 32-year old Oswalt remains a high-reward pitcher with a 3.42 ERA, 120 strikeouts and 34 walks over 129 innings this year.
