March 28, 2008 6:47 p.m. EST Matt Aug - AHN Sports Reporter Atlanta, GA (AHN) - The Atlanta Braves turned to their arch-rival New York Mets on Friday in an effort to solidify their infield. The Braves claimed Ruben Gotay, released on Thursday from their NL-East rival, off waivers to get spot action in the infield and provide some experience at the plate. Gotay hit nearly .300 last season for the Mets, rapping four home runs with 24 RBI in 98 games. Despite being able to play second base, third base and shortstop as he did in stints last season in New York, Gotay was reportedly not a favorite of Mets manager Willie Randolph. Gotay was stunned and upset after his release from the Mets on Thursday as the team went with Fernando Tatis. "I thought I did a good job last year and I didn't deserve this," Gotay, dabbing away tears, told the New York Daily News.
